It has some pitfalls. I was using British spellings in my manuscripts, but it turns out US spellings are preferred. Just received my copy edits and could see a dozen places where the copy editor had changed my British spellings to US versions - and I couldn't figure out why.
Turns out, the market for these books (AUGUSTA HAWKE) is bigger in the US, so US spelling makes it easier all round. It's a relief to not have to turn that spelling switch on and off. Now if the world could use all the same voltage and units of measure, we might get somewhere. Copyedits have just come in for the 2nd Augusta Hawke. So I know what I'll be doing from now until @Bouchercon2022! It's my last pass at changing anything inconsistent in the plot or character descriptions. Sort of a nerve-wracking process.
